The art of the in-between

We all feel the cooler weather is approaching but I am not putting any of my summer clothes away….yet. Mornings are cool but come lunch time, the outer layer comes off. Finding what to wear during this season change can be challenging. So let’s talk about layering. The art of combining different garments to adapt to fluctuating temperatures.

Key components of layering:

*The base layer

Purpose: foundation closest to your skin. It should be comfortable and breathable.

Example: fitted tees, tanks, cami, or lightweight long sleeve tops.

Fabric: natural fibres like cotton or merino wool.

*The mid layer

Purpose: this layer adds warmth and is where you can add personality with colour and texture.

Example: light weight sweaters (cotton, linen knits) cardigans, vests, or button down shirts.

Style tip: adding a simple cardigan or chunky knit sweater can refresh a summer dress for a cooler day.

*The outer layer

Purpose: this is your shield against the elements and completes the overall look.

Example: denim jacket, (faux) leather jacket, utility jacket, trench coat.

Style tip: this layer should be easy to put on and off as needed.

Play with textures. Mixing different fabrics like soft knits with leather, or denim with suede, to create depth and visual interest.

Focus on versatile pieces. Investing in transitional items that can be styled in multiple ways. This is my favourite way to shop! A denim skirt can be worn with a tee and sandals in the summer and with a pair of tights, boots, and sweater in the fall.

Balanced proportions! The most important. Avoid top or bottom heavy looks. When wearing a chunky sweater paired with a slender pant make sure to wear a chunkier shoe/boot.

Use accessories thoughtfully. Scarves, hats, and boots can add the finishing touch to a layered outfit.

Swapping sandals for ankle boots with a tight instantly transitions a look for fall. Adding a scarf to a denim jacket or a blazer does the same.

If you are looking to refresh your wardrobe for fall, start with a neutral color palette to make mixing and matching easier. Then incorporate pops of seasonal colours.

Enjoy those dresses, pants, and shorts right into fall. Linens too?! Absolutely! Just layer.
